PWC BOD approves association, Audubon too!
After an intense presentation to the PWC Board last night, there was a loud round of applause. I want to pass that applause on to all who took part and made this possible. My thanks to: Rosemary Slater for making a phone call that resulted in me talking with Brad Leate My beautiful daughter Rhiannon, who has loved animals since she could see, for not letting me off lightly when talking with Brad...

Dumpster tamed
The Dumpster of Death is tamed by few hours’ work from some hard working folks. And a secret weapon - my friend and neighbor, Aaron Somawang, who brought his battery power-tools, great attitude, and lots of great building experience to the task.  Thanks to Dave, Rosemary, and Aaron.  Thanks also for the great cooperation with Eric Endersby and Evan Buddenhagen of Morro Bay Harbor Patrol who...

A stitch in time...
A work party will gather around the Dumpster of Death Saturday morning at 9AM. The idea is to provide a long-lasting screen to prevent Pelicans falling into the dumpster, while encouraging fishermen to post their waste into the bin. Thre are two further steps we can take, and I would love people reading this to think about how we could make these things happen… Provide an additional...

Waste Bin Goal met in 24 hours! Thanks!
Pacific Wildlife Care is helping to collect donations for the purchase of bins to collect fish waste to protect seabirds and for composting. You can read what this is about in my previous post. I’ll keep track here of donors and amounts, for posterity.  More donations are welcome, until we reach our target. If we exceed the target, we’ll buy more bins, or related essentials.   The red...

Eventful week for Morro Bay wildlife...
And they don’t even know it yet. A unique agreement is being brokered by Pacific Wildlife Care between the most prominent sport fishing company in Morro Bay, and a group that may become known as the Compost Partners.  The goal of the agreement is to prevent fish waste from entering the ocean and Morro Bay. We expect three benefits: Juvenile pelicans, too young to know better, will be...

Dumpster
Russ, I was talking with four fishermen, I let them know that maybe some changes might be coming to the dumpster. All I got was laughter. They said if we put a lid on it, they will just throw the waste on top of the lid. Someone on this blog talked about these guys “walking” over to the dumpster. They were not talking about all the guys I’ve observed. There is NO walking,...

Pacific Wildlife Care
I appreciate the link that Debbie placed on the PWC facebook page. I encourage PWC members, my fishig friends, and Morro Bay residenst to sign up to become involved in improving what most agree is an imperfect situation.

Charles again... →
Charles, who I met this evening, is also a building contractor. A practical man. He was suggesting grinding fish waste, in-situ, and then freezing it to make blocks of chum that could be placed on his anchor, on the bottom, or suspended in water.  The link above takes you to a document from Louisiana about fish waste composting. That’s another approach. It’s interesting how what was...

A fisherman named Charles...
…and his pretty lady-friend were telling me, while I fixed the plastic screeen this evening, how the dumpster-of-death problem could be solved by putting a simple wooden roof on the containing structure. That would be a cheap, quick, and effective improvement. Perhaps that’s all we need to do to reduce the danger to pelicans, and also to discourage seabirds from begging from the...

Help for Hooked Birds
I hope the people at The Seabird Sanctuary in Indian Shores, Florida will not mind if I share their excellent information about preventing and helping hooked Birds… It’s a fascinating read, and should prepare anyone with a little courage to help save a life. After the fold…. Help for Hooked Birds   A fishing hook can kill or permanently injure a bird. Please         take...

Fellow Bird Allies →
It’s a great thing to find others looking for and finding solutions to the problems that challenge us. Contamination of wild birds with fish waste is not a new thing. And we can prevent it through simple and cost-effective measures. Follow this link to read about what Monte Merrick and friends have done up in Crescent City. I hope to be in touch with this group, to exchange notes.

Cleaning the Cleaning Station
Every Thursday! Cleaning time… On Thursdays, a whole week’s bird excrement is scrubbed away using high pressure jets. And here is how it looks afterwards. Spotless!

great job Russ
One thought for the station would be screen on the open windows to exclude flies and birds. Otherwise design is nice…don’t quite know how trucks will get down the ramp. Paula

What is this all about?
Morro Bay’s businesses, and therefore its whole economy, depend on visitors for much of their income. Commercial fishing is limited and not the free-for-all it once was. And the power station is being used less for economic and regulatory reasons. There is therefore less tax revenue from those sources to the city. Visitors enjoy the wildlife, the fishing, the beaches, and walking the...
